So let me put it clear from the first line: trusting invalid certificates is wrong.

And now I will explain why it’s wrong and why there are few excuses for it.

We are talking here about certificates for SSL encryption, which serves basically two purposes:

Privacy — data is transferred encrypted and can only be decrypted by the intended recipient and not a third party wiretapping the line.
Authentication — making sure the receiving end that will be able to decrypt the data is who they claim to be and data is not diverted to a different receiver by a third party with access to manipulating our transfers.

Let's start with a bit of history.

Casim.ir is a URL shortener developed by Nicolas Hoizey in PHP eleven years ago (stylized by then as Cas.im/ir) with the intention of creating a light and simple URL shortener.

About seven years ago, I installed it to create my own private URL shortener at chu.so and some other open and public ones with some modifications on Nicolas's project.

Shortly after, I started contributing to the project with improvements and bugfixes and almost instantly Nicolas gave me direct write permission.

One day, we were waiting for the bus to go to Auschwitz and it was quite rainy, so we went into a bar in the deepest Poland that had one of those machines that you put coins so you can choose which song you want to hear. We've all heard this ever. Some may even have used this argument: "it works for me." It seems that it works as a defense of the effectiveness of everything. From homeopathy to ouija including NLP or MMS. If you've tried it and you've seen that it works and maybe you even know more people that say that it works, we could say that its effectiveness is proved, right? Let's see why this argument could be wrong.

Our perception of efficacy is affected by certain psychological and sociological biases that prevent us from correctly assessing the results and even alter them unconsciously. This is a well-known phenomenon and this is why personal experience is a questionable way of generating knowledge. Instead, we use studies carried out using the scientific method that has been designed to attempt to correct and neutralize these biases in order to try to get results as objective and solid as possible. Also, if the results resist falsification tests and replication by different teams, we ensure a more consistent result.

For greater clarity when explaining why personal experience is not a valid proof, we are going to review with a little more detail some of these biases with examples of how they affect the assessment of an outcome. It should be clear that all we apply these biases, mostly unconsciously. So we can't assume bad faith on those who fall into these biases and can't either consider ourselves free of them.

Confirmation bias. Probably one of the best known and studied. It may be referred to by many other names or subtypes, some of which are also explained below, like recall bias, cherry-picking, biased interpretation, etc. It is the tendency we have to give more value to cases that confirm our point of view. This applies, for example, if we take a homeopathic preparation every time we have a cold and the third part of the times we do it, we are healed. If we tend to believe that homeopathy works, we will give more validity and representativeness to that cases where we've cured even though it is less the times —and however, it may not be representative even if they were most of the cases, as we will see below. It is the unconscious tendency we have to give more relevance to cases that favor our point of view and disregard those who contradict it.

It is unusual to see a computer engineer defending users. Even more if the engineer is a system administrator. It is known that the relationship between system administrators and users is tense. But when somebody tries to fool me, I get even more tense.
Let's go over the facts.

The registrar

I'm updating the administrative contact of some domain names registered with a well-known Spanish registrar. The company listed as the administrative contact no longer exists and now the domain names belong to another company, so I have to update all the data, but that's another story. Now I will transfer the domain to another registrar, so I only need to change the e-mail address to get the auth code to transfer the domain name to another registrar. I will correct the rest of the contact details at the new registrar.
I leave all data as is and just change the e-mail address, then I submit the form and it does nothing. It does not send the data, shows no message, no action, nothing. I try with different browsers and the result is always the same. Since I know a little bit about this, I go to the browser error console and this is what I found there:

It's something that I ever asked myself and recently I have somebody asked it to me again: what free (as in free beer or as in free speech) video editors are there?
A video editor is a very complex piece of software to develop, so there are not many free solutions, the few ones that we can find are not very good and the ones you have to pay for are quite expensive.
There are other types of complex software developments like web browsers and office suites, but a video editor can be even more complex and in addtion it has very specific and small user group, so they will have less ability to attract volunteer developers. Everyone use a web browser, but too few people use a video editor. It is difficult to entice a developer to devote their free time to a project so complex and with so little reception as a video editor and those who do it, won't expend the same effort. A web browser and an office suite have a much larger user base and therefore may attract a larger number of volunteer programmers willing to develop a free version. So there are very good browsers (Firefox, Chromium) and office suites (LibreOffice) and sometimes the free version may even exceed commercial version and although part of their development is done by volunteers as a hobby it also gets support and funding from major corporations and foundations such as Google, Mozilla, Oracle, Apple and Apache. Actually, none of the success stories mentioned departed from scratch but it originated in a commercial project freeing its source: Firefox comes from Netscape, LibreOffice from StarOffice and Chromium ... well, Chromium story is a little different as it has always been free software (KHTML), although it would have been impossible to exists without the contributions of Apple and Google to its WebKit engine through its commercial projects Safari and Chrome, respectively. So to have a free video editor that can compete with commercial versions, we will have to wait for Apple releasing Final Cut source code as free (don't expect for that right now).
In addition , those who have already worked with video editing have proven that it is a resource-intensive task (processor, memory and hard drive), so a video editor has to be efficient and well planned, adding more complexity to the project.
For all this, the few free solutions that are can't compete with commercial software: cut video pieces and put them somewhere else, add some simple effects and little else. As my video editing needs are very basic, with LiVES I have more than enough. Another solution is VLMC from VideoLan people who often do things pretty well (VLC Media Player), but the last time I tried VLMC was still in a very early stage of development and very limited, it was little more than a sketch. I don't know how VLMC have evolved since then, but I would not have much hope now.
An often recommended option in forums is Cinelerra, but my experience with it was disastrous because its instability made it unusable: every time I tried to do something it either hanged or closed, it was impossible to do anything.
But overall, my experience with video editing free software goes back some years, so it may have changed, hopefully well.

It's not something I do very often, but that day I felt like I had to innovate or something like that.

But innovation was a disaster, it is not a good idea to rename a library linked using its exact path by all system dynamic executables, just to take into account if you are going to have the same idea.

Well, we will notice the disaster we have caused because every time you try to run any executable you will get the following message:

No such file or directory.

What is not finding is ld.so, which is a library that is linked by all dynamic executables on the system, so the first thing we must do is not to close any session or any program you have open. Because, since we can't execute any dynamic executable, every program we close will be a program that we might need and won't be able to reopen.

Coriolis effect and drains

It's a widely held belief that water from a drain turns in one direction in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. And in the equator... I don't know, It doesn't turn in the equator, it just falls straight down I guess. Those who want to go a little further and are able to remember the name, normally attribute this effect to a mysterious Coriolis effect. Although probably they are not able to explain what it is, the fact that it relates to a scientific theory seems enough to give credibility without actually checking if this relationship is real, although anyone can try it at home: just pull the plug and look how the water falls.

Coriolis Effect and drains, again

It's a widely held belief that water falls down the drain turning in the same direction in one hemisphere of the Earth and the opposite direction in the other hemisphere.
I remember, an X-Files episode (which implies that this happened about 15 years ago) where Mulder saw the water falling down the drain turning clockwise and that, Scully, is impossible because we are in the northern hemisphere and water always turns counterclockwise here.
It's also quite famous that episode of The Simpsons in which Bart rides a mess with Australia on account of the water spinning in different directions depending on the hemisphere you are on. It is a premise that is repeated several times on the episode giving it as true, to the regret of those who are hardcore fans of this show and feel sorry about its continued lurching between episodes that defend critical thinking, positivism and rationalism in contrast to other episodes that do just the opposite defending pseudoscience, postmodernism and magical thinking. Fortunately, it seems that the times of magic in The Simpsons are left in the past (excepting those pleasant Halloween specials) and ultimately the rational option is gaining ground. Or maybe it's just what I want to think.
Actually, Bart's attitude during the chapter is quite strict from a scientific point of view, the problem is with the facts observed during Bart's experiments. Lisa transfers to Bart her beliefs about drains. But Bart, instead of accepting it without doubts, adopts a skeptical attitude and is willing to test it and try to nullify it. Since he doesn't find a counterexample in a first trial, he provisionally accepts the hypothesis but goes on doing more experiments in search of a counterexample. And so it ends up causing the conflict with Australia.
During the chapter, Bart confirms in each trial that water turns in the direction predicted by the hypothesis, but would it be the same in the Real World ™ instead of a cartoon world? How many of those who have heard this belief have acted the same way? How many have tested the transmitted hypothesis? Anyway, recently, the same day, two separate and distinct people said quite convinced to me the plausibility of this hypothesis, but I could not just accept it. I could not deny it either without a counterexample. I had to test the hypothesis, do the experiment and then say what I have to say about it with some basis. And this is the result:

La pulga snob - Sexista

This Saturday, December 1st, a TEDx event was held in Valencia: TEDxValenciaWomen. Two other TEDx events were held this weekend in Spain: TEDxGalicia and TEDxPonferrada on Friday, but I couldn't pay attention to those two because it was a weekday, I'll wait for the videos to be published.

TED events are a set of conferences where speakers can talk about different topics. Originally these were mostly technological topics, as the name suggests. Later they were opened to some other topics having as objective dissemination and science. Then more topics where allowed and nowadays they cover a lot of issues and their current slogan is "Ideas worth spreading". Although opinions have emerged lately that say TED principles have gradually been corrupted to accommodate other ideas that do not deserve so worth spreading.

The umpteenth moving

Since I first set up this web page, six years ago, I moved its hosting four times. I don't know if this is too much, but it looks so for me.
And the reason for so many movings is that I used poor quality web hostings. I've never worried about having a good web hosting since I maintain this web site as a hobby and it won't be a great disaster if the web is offline for a while, so I never spent any money in hosting. This is why I was tolerant of some bad service, since I was not paying for it. But my patience is not infinite.
The last time I moved, I did it to 000webhost and I had been using it for several years and I was moderately satisfied even with its poor unsatisfactory operation, its common web downtimes, its even more common MySQL downtimes and that, of course, every time there is a problem with the servers, we the free users are the first to suffer it.
So some time ago I decided to move the site to my company servers. But, you know, I became lazy, I procrastinated… but then those nice people at 000webhost, Hostinger, Hosting24 or whatever they are called today decided to push me to do it by shutting down my web page without previous announcement because of an excessive processor usage... Excessive processor usage! A WordPress blog with less than 30 visits per day!
On top of everything else, since my account is suspended, I can't neither get log files to see what happened with that supposed excessive processor usage nor download web files and database.
Luckily, I had a backup of the whole site (excepting last two posts that I was able to recover from Google cache) and finally I moved to which I hope will be the final hosting: TICaaS hosting cluster by Ulteria Comunicaciones. Where, since we have full control over the servers, I hope my problems and limitations will finish.

This is a situation that I found at work: I use KMail and my co-workers use Thunderbird. We use a shared e-mail account and, when they reply to a message, I can see it as replied, but when I reply to a message from KMail, only KMail can see it as replied.
You can imagine where the problem may be and, after a little research, this is what I found.

The title of this post is ambiguous, since it can be interpreted as "making web pages is something easy for everyone" or as "even the most inept is allowed to make a web page".

Well, when I was exchanging tweets with @dsubies I said that I am an Opera user and he asked me why I use Opera. Since 140 characters are too few to explain it I said him that I will answer him here. Well, long after that, here is the answer.

At the time I started using the Internet the only serious alternatives were Internet Explorer (I'm sorry, I said serious) and Netscape Navigator. Then I discovered Opera, which included interesting innovations like tabs, pop-ups blocker and a download manager. Approximately at the same time, I started using Linux and one of the more exasperating things were the horrible look, the uncomfortable toolkit, which I think it was some Athena variant (I can't explain this, those who lived with this will understand it) and the instability of Netscape for Linux. A few later, while Netscape slowly died in hands of AOL, Firefox appeared, characterized by its resources voracity and its slowness, increasing my bet for Opera. If you add this to the fact that I used to have old computers, I really needed to use a light and agile browser.

Some time ago I bought an eBook in PDF format. Yes, I paid for it. And it seems that the distributors thought that it would be a great idea if I couldn't open the file with any PDF reader or if I couldn't select, copy or print text from that book, so they protected it with a proprietary plug-in for Adobe Acrobat.

Now I need to read this PDF, so I thought that I would have to install that plug-in, but then I realized that the plug-in is no longer maintained (at least for Linux) and it doesn't work with current Acrobat versions so I can't read the PDF I paid.

The situation is as follows: a website which, after logging in with a username and a password, allows you to register new users and a Mozilla Firefox user with the option to remember passwords enabled.

The case: the user adds a new account or logs in with an account and then edits this account from another account.

The problem: When the user is adding the new account Firefox will fill the fields with the user and password of the current account. When the user is editing an existing account Firefox will fill the fields with the username and password from the account being edited —which is also in the password reminder— if the user is not editing the account with the intent to change its password will not notice that only the first of the two fields "Password" and "Repeat password" is filled, so when the user tries to save it will display "Passwords don't match" error.

Did you know that teTeX development was abandoned more than two years ago? And it's recommended to migrate to TeX Live. When I was doing so by reading the Gentoo Linux guide I found that it says: if you have modified configuration files under /etc/texmf.... How will I know that? I modified many configuration files and I can't remember which ones I've modified. I thought about using equery to check that, but I only know the command to check all the files in a package, not a single file, so I thought that it would be easier to do my own script than to read the whole equery man page. I must blame Fonso again, because he asks me about something like FlashGot but for Opera in Linux, i.e., a way to be able to select a block of RapidShare URLs to download them with a premium account with a download manager. So when I didn't find anything, I started with it.

I finally got a bash script that receives a list of links as parameters and adds them to Aria with a RapidShare premium account. Using aria was not a choice, since it was the only one, apart from wget, that supports RapidShare premium accounts (i.e., HTTP authentication) without problems.

Do you remember the web 15 years ago? The advertisements were almost unknown, like spaghetti webs. As the web became more popular and with the dot-com boom it was needed a way to finance so much hype, and then was when massive advertisements arrived.

Nowadays we are in a situation where, except some blogs and personal webpages is hard to find a webpage which doesn't have, at least, some Adsense block, which is not the worse we can find, because then there are pop-ups, ads trying to install malware or that epileptic scams. And cases like Terra, which joins many of the features cited previously (spaghetti web born with dot-com bubble with a high mediatic hype and following crash) with rectangle ads which break its confusing layout. Or other sites with so many advertisements (usually focused on the same topic) that it's hard to find page contents.

Update: This workaround is no longer needed with Opera 9.50 which seems to solve this problem. Check your version and update if needed.

Google has recently developed a new Google Docs version and if you thought they took the chance to improve (at least a little) the compatibility with other browsers, you couldn't be more mistaken. Actually, it went worse with Opera.

If previously it was enough by adding ?browserok=true in order to enter Google Docs with Opera and mask it as Internet Explorer to use Spreadsheets, now it gets constantly reloading with Google Docs and Spreadsheets is only usable with a poor read-only interface (masking Opera as IE throws errors).

Today I will become narcissistic. Because who hasn't ever googled his/her name while being bored? Looking for my real name, besides a Canarian paper maker, there is no much more that doesn't refer to me.

But anyone aspiring to be someone on the Internet must choose an original, unequivocal nickname. Since originality is not my talent, as a fan of The Simpsons, I tried at a first time with homer there by the beginnings of IRC-Hispano when I didn't know yet who was that Scytale that was in all channels, but since that nick was taken, showing my originality, I derived it to h0m3r, and this was what remained. But as time passed I began to detest it, it's uncomfortable and too l33t. So when Fonso renamed me as Chuso (whose etymology I won't explain now) I accepted it and took as my new nickname (though I still usually use h0m3r as my username for historical reasons), but it was a surprise to discover that it wasn't as unusual as I expected. So I'm known in the global village mostly with these two nicknames ('cause sometimes I'm forced to choose another username), and like me, many other people. I envied Firefox extension for MLDonkey which allows you to add elinks and torrents to MLDonkey from the browser with a single click, even if MLDonkey is running in other PC. It's a luxury I want to have in Opera, is quite easy.

In addition to those problems, I had more with my page: after the server being down for two days, my webpage was blocked arguing traffic limit exceeded after transferring 5 KiB, while my quota is 10 MiB/day. A so low limit usually causes my webpage to be blocked, so I started using Coral CDN cache in addition to other measures to mitigate excessive traffic. However, Coral CDN makes my site much slower and some forms stopped to work.

Those that usually visit my page (yes, there are such people) would notice that it had an irregular behavior being inaccessible the most of the time. It was due to two reasons:

If you usually visit community portals in the PHPNuke style and similar you may find that some webpages say that you need to register with Canalmail to be able to access to any section (for example, download links). Canalmail is a very annoying commercial mass mail service and since one of the webpages I usually visit now uses Canalmail I finally made this script with JavaScript that replaces intermediate Canalmail URLs by the effective URL avoiding registering with Canalmail.

The infamous case of Sony slipping us a rootkit with some of their audio CDs that includes the issue that hides files and registry entries beginning with $sys$ , even with registry editors and some antivirus, giving the work done to virii, trojans and other malware. The scandal was immediate and the story spread widely, this is why now sounds so surprising that Sony tried the same again, this time with its USB memory sticks. It was discovered by F-Secure and heard by McAfee that showed its perplexity about Sony hitting the same stone twice and shows us that this time is even easier: it even isn't needed the user to install Sony's rootkit in order to take its advantages to virii scene, since this time the way they hide the rootkit (of course, at the API layer, so antivirus can't reach it) is with an executable file that blocks access to the directory it's executed from. Proved by a video that executing it in %windir% blocks access to the entire directory getting a useless Windows (if you'll forgive the repetition).

I've announced in LosEstores.com opening that it was entirely made with free software and it was hosted in a not-for-profit server managed by a community of UNIX users. Finally, this final point is no longer true.

First, they came the attacks against the server (it's not their fault, but doesn't help), then the constant hangups and finally our service is suspended without notice saying that we didn't pay for July, which is false. After contacting them our service is restored without any explanation. If we add a sometimes arrogant attitude by the administrator, there are not many reasons to stay with SDF. It may be a good service for personal use, but unlucky for commercial use.

If you don't know it you should try it. Neverball is one of the best free games (thanks, Adian), based on Monkey Target minigame from Super Monkey Ball. It's a bit difficult the first time, but then it becomes quite entertaining and very addictive.

In one of those nightly Neverball sessions two days ago, this time with PedrE, we got the idea: Why only three lifes? It's very annoying when you are obstinate to have only three tries and you have to go back to main menu to select again the same level. Why we can't have infinite lifes?. Well, here it is, the patch to be able to set up the number of balls in Neverball. You have to use balls option in ~/.neverball/neverballrc file, with negative values meaning infinite balls.

I know I've already criticized Internet Explorer because of its distinctive way to interpret standards. But then I found the bug-of-the-day issue which means that Internet Explorer will give you an unexpected behavior failing where other browsers get success, so you must waste even hours or sometimes days to guess that what's going wrong this time with Microsoft's most (in)famous product may be:

If a JavaScript function modifies the src attribute in a <img> tag, but it doesn't do it at the end of the function, the loading of the image may be canceled.
An <IMG> tag with id and name but without src (common case of an image that will be manipulated through JavaScript) causes to loss session variables unexpectedly.
If you change a <div> visibility style from hidden to visible, sometimes this change is not applied to the child objects which should inherit this property.
IE doesn't support position: fixed;.
PNGs using an alpha channel for transparency show black background instead of transparency in IE.
If you create an object with document.createElement() and then append it to content with appendChild() it won't be initialized, you should use innerHTML property or insertBefore() or similar.
onmouseover event doesn't work over transparent backgrounds.

These are the most recent that I can't remember now, but any web developer can surely apport much more. Many of these bugs have been solved in Internet Explorer 7, but 5.5 and 6.0 are still the most used.

You can get one at FreeDNS, where you can host your domain with a free DNS service with access to A, NS, MX, CNAME, TXT, ... records or web forward.

With a free account you are allowed to register five domains (if I'm right), either a top-level domain (like a .com) or a subdomain from the more than 30,000 they have registered as .1.vg. And giving donations you get access to TTL and wildcards and the records number quota is increased.

Linux has never been an FSF project, and has never even been a "Free Software" project.
The whole "Open Source" renaming was done largely exactly because people wanted to distance themselves from the FSF.

I set up my new website over PHP. I tried to improve its appareance and functionality to a less about:blank based schema, though it still need much improvements. When it become developed and tested enough I may do it open source, but nowadays it's still too much beta and untested. It also has not much content (in fact, most of I added it for testing), more will be added.

Yes, there are good games for Linux too, although this is the main argument against Linux. Below, a list of games so you can verify it, some of then are quite big and others may seem too simple, but eventhough, being less resource aggressive, are very adictive. These are only a little selection (I may add more in the future, if so, it will be announced in the News column on the right), there are many more you can find in the webpages at the end of this list. Some of them have a version for Windows or MacOS and then you can see their download links, any way, almost all the games have their source code available for download, so you can try to compile it if a version for your platform is not provided. In Gentoo all this games are in Portage or some of its overlays. There also are versions formother systems like BeOS, UN*X, Dreamcast, ... See game web page for more information.
