Bye, SDF

Powerful Hosting at Modwest...

I've announced in LosEstores.com opening that it was entirely made with free software and it was hosted in a not-for-profit server managed by a community of UNIX users. Finally, this final point is no longer true.

First, they came the attacks against the server (it's not their fault, but doesn't help), then the constant hangups and finally our service is suspended without notice saying that we didn't pay for July, which is false. After contacting them our service is restored without any explanation. If we add a sometimes arrogant attitude by the administrator, there are not many reasons to stay with SDF. It may be a good service for personal use, but unlucky for commercial use.

Set Up Balls Number In Neverball

Neverball infinite lifes

If you don't know it you should try it. Neverball is one of the best free games (thanks, Adian), based on Monkey Target minigame from Super Monkey Ball. It's a bit difficult the first time, but then it becomes quite entertaining and very addictive.

In one of those nightly Neverball sessions two days ago, this time with PedrE, we got the idea: Why only three lifes? It's very annoying when you are obstinate to have only three tries and you have to go back to main menu to select again the same level. Why we can't have infinite lifes?. Well, here it is, the patch to be able to set up the number of balls in Neverball. You have to use balls option in ~/.neverball/neverballrc file, with negative values meaning infinite balls.

Safari and MSIE on Linux

As soon as I knew about Safari for Windows I knew what I wanted to do: after being able to run Internet Explorer on Linux it's time to do the same with Safari.
It's not easy, but when you know what you have to do it isn't difficult. And if you see how it works on Windows:

Safari for Windows crash

you can't expect great things with Wine either

These are the steps needed to be able to run Safari on Linux using Wine.

Jëkýll & Hyde toolbar for Opera 9.2

Jëkýll & Hyde is a powerful and useful toolbar and menu set for Opera, but its last version was designed over Opera 8, so it doesn't include support for some features introduced in version 9, such as Create search or Content Blocking, so when you install this toolbar yo lose this options.

I've made a modified version of Jëkýll & Hyde toolbar to include support to those features and some other improvements and fixes. Some of the changes included:

<sarcasm>I really love Internet Explorer</sarcasm>

Time breakdown of modern web design

I know I've already criticized Internet Explorer because of its distinctive way to interpret standards. But then I found the bug-of-the-day issue which means that Internet Explorer will give you an unexpected behavior failing where other browsers get success, so you must waste even hours or sometimes days to guess that what's going wrong this time with Microsoft's most (in)famous product may be:

These are the most recent that I can't remember now, but any web developer can surely apport much more. Many of these bugs have been solved in Internet Explorer 7, but 5.5 and 6.0 are still the most used.

Amelia - A Utility to Free Disk Space

Since I don't know about any utility to free disk space and what I rm to get free disk space is always the same (Portage temp files, thumbnails, kernel temp files, ...) I decided to make a quick-and-dirty script with graphical interface which automates the process.

I named it Amelia in memory of the cleaning woman used by my teacher school to threaten us, if you are interested in this utility:

How to get a .1.vg domain name

FreeDNS

Some times visitors arrive here googling for how to get a .1.vg domain name (yes, I told you, I spy you), so I'm finally going to say you how to get it, then you can stop searching.

You can get one at FreeDNS, where you can host your domain with a free DNS service with access to A, NS, MX, CNAME, TXT, ... records or web forward.

With a free account you are allowed to register five domains (if I'm right), either a top-level domain (like a .com) or a subdomain from the more than 30,000 they have registered as .1.vg. And giving donations you get access to TTL and wildcards and the records number quota is increased.

Reloacting system DLLs

What a week. Microsoft puts its foot in it and then I have to fix it, of course, it's what has to happen.

If this sentences does also sound familiar to you:

Illegal System DLL Relocation The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

Stay calm, it doesn't mean that it's time to format or call your tech-slacky, it's only that Windows has decided to compensate your loyalty with a bug in its latest update. And I'm going to compensate your loyalty as my reader and one of my visitors using Windows (yes, I spy you) telling you how to fix it saving you searching, you only have to install the following patch:

How to fix flash player to work on any browser

Campaign for a non-browser-specific WWW

Update: Opera 9.50 seems to solve this problem. Check your version and update if needed.

After a serious vulnerability had been discovered in Acrobat Reader for PDF, one of the leading products from Adobe now becoming a standard, which affected all browsers now the online video format they are also trying to introduce as a standard doesn't work with some browsers. You can check that Flash plugin for Linux (it seems that also affects Windows) doesn't play FLV video with Opera (you can also find cases with Firefox or Konqueror). You can find many reports of many users with this problem, I also had my fight with it. Finally, Gentoo Bugzilla gave me the answer:
